Beginning Joomla! Website Development

I'm happy to announce that my new book, Beginning Joomla! Website Development, is now shipping if you order it from the publisher's website! It will start shipping from online retailers like Amazon later this week.

Beginning Joomla! will take the reader step-by-step through the process of building a website with Joomla! 1.5. From beginning to end, the book will explain a concept and show how that concept relates to the development of an actual sample web site the reader can access online. This book applies each concept to a real-world example every step of the way. Once a concept is explained in theory, it is then illustrated by showing how one would implement each concept in a real web site.

Does this book apply to Joomla 1.0 because that is what my website is using...If not, do you have a book that does explain Joomla 1.5?

* a good editor for Joomla? I mean the default one spits out deprecated code.
* linking pages (the articles) to css files? it's not so easy for someone who's familiar with xhtml+css how to get this done. e.g. when i want a different background image for some pages (sorry articles)
* styling the articles in CSS without using inline css.
these are the main issues I bump into, and strangely enough I can't find information about this on internet. Possibly I don't instruct google well... to find a tutorial/explanation??
* how to totally get rid of the table=based core of Joomla?
There are certainly advantages to Joomla, but there are still quite a lot of disadvantages (the above)

Hi,
I want to upgrade from 1.0 to 1.5. Am I going to have to rebuild the site? Or does it automatically upgrade? All the help (books) I can find is for 1.5 not 1.0
Thanks

Joomla! 1.0 -> 1.5 Migration
written by Kyle Ledbetter, March 25, 2009
(Cory, feel free to delete this if it qualifies as spam)

There's no direct upgrade to 1.5, you'll need a professional to migrate your site. I recommend our programming partner SourceCoast.com, though they may be booked right now http://www.sourcecoast.com/joomla-migration

Hi shanique... to answer your questions:

* There is an entire section of the book devoted to popular 3rd party extensions, and part of that section lists some excellent WYSIWYG editors.
* It does not explicitly talk about linking pages/articles to css files. That is a bit more advanced than this book was intended to go. You could do this by giving a page a page class suffix, and then modifying the default css file in your template.
* There is a chapter on building a Joomla template. It does not go into full detail on how to get rid of the core tables, but there is a discussion on template overrides, which are the primary means of getting rid of those annoying tables.

I understand your frustration with Joomla, but the disadvantages you mention can be overcome with practice and patience.

@Kamie... You can migrate a site from 1.0 to 1.5 without totally rebuilding it, but it's not a simple task. It might be good to look into hiring someone with experience doing this. The SourceCoast.com guys that Kyle mentioned do top-notch work.

One thing to consider is that it might be a good idea to rebuild the site, depending on how long it has been in existence. Sometimes I like the opportunity to start from scratch on a site. In some cases, it's actually easier to start from scratch than to upgrade.

thanks for your reply,

much appreciated. it's like going back to kindergarten when you start with Joomla and being reasonably confident to make things work "just" with xhtml+css.
You're right though: patience and practise.
Thanks again.
