The only way to do that is to use a 3rd party component to extend the user profiles. One option is Community Builder (www.joomlapolis.com), but that might be overkill for what you are trying to do. Another option is JoomSuite User (http://joomsuite.com/index.php?option=com_resource&view=article&article=17&Itemid=13), but unfortunately it is not free.
