We've all done it. There's nothing to be ashamed of. Have you ever installed Joomla!, only to realize that you've forgotten your administrator password? When that happens, there is nothing you can do but re-install Joomla, right? Wrong. Here is a website with a great explanation of how to reset your super administrator password, even if you can't log in to the administrator control panel. Don't thank me. Thank them.

Another way to do it is to short out the php in pluginsauthenticationjoomla.php instead of
if ($crypt == $testcrypt) do this if (true /* $crypt == $ testcrypt) login as admin with a junk password. Don't forget the new password and to reenable authentication.  3 report abuse

Jack, thats a nice tip.
You don't have to open ssh and log into mysql or use phpmyadmin. Just an ftp user and ftp client. BTW: the method on the linked site won't work with newer Joomla versions - I think 1.0.13 and onwards. They have the md5 hash of the password and a random string/seed concatenated together in the password field. (This gives a bit more entropy in the password hash) You'll need something like:
This will set the password to "pass" for the first Super Admin. 6 report abuse
